The Big Green Egg Smoker Vs. Other BBQ Grills: Is The Big Green Egg BBQ Grill A Good Fit For You?

If you are a grill fanatic, you've probably heard of the Big Green Egg cooker. It's a ceramic barbeque grill you can use as a grill, smoker and a brick oven. It's so versatile you can prepare anything from hamburgers and steaks and other traditional grill foods to desserts, breads and also pizza.

Eggheads are very enthusiastic about the big green egg smoker, but you might be wondering what makes the Egg (as it's fondly called) out-shine other grills.

Probably the biggest difference is the overall look of the grill. big green egg grill is well, green and in the shape of a big egg. While I can't say precisely why it's green, I can say that the egg shape was created (purposely) to offer the ability to regulate and maintain the heat within the grill a lot better than other grills.

The next largest difference is the material. Rather than being made with metal, the Big Green Egg has thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is a lot more durable in comparison with other materials, so the Egg will last longer than other grills, it can be cooked on year long (even in freezing temperatures). It's also safer, particularly when there are small children running around, because the ceramic material is cooler than traditional metal grills plus you always grill with the lid down, so you don't have to worry about flare-ups.

There are several other differences but one of my favorites is the fan club the big green egg cooker has. There are plenty of Egg followers and gatherings throughout the U.S., and Eggheads are eager to share their stories, tips and recipes at events and also on the Egghead forum. I can't think of any other grill that has such a following.

Now, the Egg does have some disadvantages in comparison with other barbecue grills. For instance, it's not a cheap barbeque grill. You can expect to spend about $700 for a large Big Green Egg. In addition, you will want to use lump wood charcoal, which isn't always easy to find and can be quite a bit more costly than traditional charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller cooking surface when compared with many gas grills, which suggests you will need a backup bbq grill if you're entertaining many people.

However, the overall flexibility of the Big Green Egg, the capability to grill, smoke or bake with your Egg, and the awesome results you will get (the Egg is very forgiving, even for newbie grillers) are well worth the price tag. If you are a barbeque enthusiast and you do a good deal of smoking in addition to grilling you will love the quality and the results you get when cooking on the Big Green Egg.
